Process mapping, or business process mapping, analyzes operational practices in order to document every step taken during the process. This analysis creates a process map and sometimes utilizes process mapping software such as Visio by Microsoft. Process mapping software expedites the creation of flow charts, flowcharts and process maps which can be further analyzed to pinpoint bottlenecks, inefficiencies in process, and opportunities for process optimization. Process maps are often used in LEAN manufacturing which seeks to reduce operational overhead and unnecesary process steps. Experts in this field are often called process engineers.
